Cannabis Seedling Care Basics

Give young plants a stable start without overwatering, overfeeding, or excessive light.

Educational only: Cultivate only where lawful, keep plants private and secure, and follow local household limits.

Use gentle, appropriate light

Seedlings need enough light to grow steadily, but intense or very close lighting can stress tender leaves. Follow the light manufacturer's seedling guidance, watch for stretching or bleaching, and adjust gradually.

Water the root zone, not the whole container

Small roots use little water. Add modest amounts near the seedling and allow the medium to begin drying before watering again. A constantly saturated large container can deprive roots of oxygen and encourage fungus gnats.

Keep conditions stable

Humidity

Young plants generally prefer moderate humidity, but stagnant wet air can encourage disease. Monitor rather than guessing.

Airflow

Use gentle circulation around the space. Strong direct airflow can dry or damage a small seedling.

Temperature

Avoid large swings and excessive heat. Check conditions at plant height, not only elsewhere in the room.

Cleanliness

Start with clean containers, tools, and growing medium to reduce early pest and disease pressure.

Avoid early overfeeding

Seedlings are sensitive to excessive nutrients. Many prepared media already contain initial nutrition. Follow the medium and nutrient label, start cautiously, and do not respond to every minor colour change by adding more feed.

Prevent problems early

  • Inspect new growth and leaf undersides regularly.
  • Use sticky traps to monitor flying pests.
  • Keep standing water and dead plant material out of the space.
  • Record changes in a grow diary.

Know when to investigate

Stretching, stalled growth, drooping, burnt tips, or persistent discolouration can have several causes. Change one variable at a time and compare symptoms with the common grow problems guide before taking action.
